My name is Jaakob Pellegrino and I am a recent graduate of Mechanical Engineering at York University. Growing up, I was always involved in sports, mainly hockey and soccer which I played competitively. I would like to say finally that I am a very well organized and have good time management skills. I realized this from a young age as I had to deal with sports, school, and work all together. I think because of this, I had more than enough time to really work on perfecting my skills. In procuring these two strengths, I have learned important personal lessons as they have helped me in every aspect of my life, especially with my engineering workload at school.
I was born and raised in Cambridge, Ontario, which is just bit outside of Kitchener. Cambridge is a small town, just more than 100 000 people, but I still enjoy it. There is a lot of farmland in Cambridge, and on top of this hockey players are notorious for their taste in country music. I think that growing up where I did, as well as the activities I was involved in, are what shaped the country-loving side of me.
During high school, including grade 12, I did not know what discipline I wanted to study during College or University, but I always had a knack for mathematics and I am very much interested in physics and the theories surrounding it. Until part way through my grade 12 year, I did not know much about the engineering discipline. It wasn’t until my mother suggested it that I did some research and found that it fit perfectly with what I was interested in, and 4 years later I have already completed 2 different engineering internship jobs.
With my involvement in sports as I grew up, I wanted to do something that reflected my interests. As an engineer, a role towards sports (especially hockey and soccer) was directed more at jobs like designing and creating new stick, cleats, balls, jerseys, equipment’s, and even technology. I realized that Mechanical Engineering was one of my better options for being involved in anything oriented around sports. Initially however, I had the idea to pursue space engineering, mainly because my love for physics and the theories with it that drove me to a love of space, but more importantly, a desire to one day go to space. Because of this, I thought that as a space engineer I would give myself the best chance to go to space. However, year later and I find myself a graduate of York University’s Mechanical Engineering program, in my first position post-education, as a Mechanical Designer at Reist Industries.
Looking to the future, my next career goal would be to receive my Professional Engineering (P.Eng) accreditation. This is a position that I see requiring a lot more experience and responsibility and over the next few years, as I work towards this, I want to continue to improve on the skills and experience I have, as well as expand my knowledge in as many engineering applications and industries as possible.
